In the weeks following the shooting in Parkland, Florida, there have been a lot of pushes for solutions to stop or at the very least decrease school shootings. Proposals include making students have clear backpacks so staff can see what inside, and some schools have installed metal detectors to decrease the chances.

Many schools have had metal detectors installed to combat this type of problem, and other schools have hired a couple more police officers to patrol campuses. However, clear backpacks are a relatively new method to curb gun violence.

One interesting thing about this is that the 9 elementary schools around the U.S are now trying out clear backpacks. Parents and other people are confused and mad that their little kids have to use them. They think that there is no real threat of students from an elementary school bringing weapons to school and that the chance is much higher with middle and high school students bringing weapons to school. At the same time, a lot of these annoyed parents do not believe that this requirement in elementary schools will last long.

Some of the students in high school used this backpack requirement to their advantage, by customizing them and showing there point of view on this whole thing, then posting their newly customized backpacks on Twitter. Reading through the comments of the pics there are a lot of people that have some very interesting views and points, like CJ on Twitter who said, “They tried this clear backpack thing when I was in school. I went to the dentist after school one day and my dentist asked, ‘Why would they care so much about the backpack when you could just carry a gun in your lunchbox?’.”

He brings up a very good point that this is just a backpack and there are a lot of things in it that you could hide weapons in. So as you can see there are many points of view on this issue, and only time will tell if this new method will work as well or better than metal detectors or the police.
