Thursday, March 29th, was opening day for Major League Baseball, with 15 games to kick off the season. Many teams made offseason trades to improve their team for the season. Some of these trades included the Yankees trading for all star Giancarlo Stanton, and The San Francisco Giants trading for Andrew McCutchen.

The new-look Yankees took on the Blue Jays in Toronto in their first game of the season. The Yankees beat the Blue Jays 6-1. New Yankees addition Giancarlo Stanton hit two home runs, one of them on his first at bat as a Yankee. New York went on to tie the series with the Jays 2-2.  The San Francisco Giants addition, Andrew McCutchen, went 1-4 in his first game as a Giant to a 1-0 win over the Dodgers. The Giants also went on to tie the series with their division rival, the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Over a week into the season, several teams are off to a very good start. Last year’s World Series champions, the Houston Astros, are off to a 6-1 start, only losing to the Texas Rangers. The Boston Red Sox are also off to a 6-1 start and only lost their first game to the Tampa Bay Rays. Capping off the teams who have started 6-1 is the Arizona Diamondbacks who are playing very well this season.

The Los Angeles Angels’ new pitcher, 23-year-old Shohei Ohtani, is showing that he can be a real force in the league after his first couple of performances. Ohtanai retired 14 of the last 15 batters he faced on Sunday; he also hit a three-run home run. Ohtani can pitch and hit, which is very rare for pitchers in the MLB.

With the season just started and a lot of hype leading into the season we will look to see how certain teams who made trades in the offseason perform and also how teams who are off to a hot start in the beginning of the season play throughout the whole 162 game season.
